Combining practical M&E Estates experience with database development, programming and digital visualisation to help organisations better understand their buildings and information.
Graham Stephens & Partners provides specialist Estates consultancy and digital services, with particular experience in complex healthcare, education and public-sector estates.
The business combines two disciplines that are often treated separately: practical knowledge of buildings, assets and compliance, and the technical ability to structure, manage and present the information generated by Estate surveys.
This combination has evolved from many years of M&E asset surveying and data collection alongside experience in database design, programming, web development and information analysis.
Today this experience forms the two complementary elements of the business: Estates Consultancy and Digital Estates.
The development of Graham Stephens & Partners has been driven by a recurring practical problem: Estate organisations often possess large quantities of useful information, but that information can be spread across drawings, spreadsheets, databases, reports and individual systems.
An early background in information analysis and database work established a strong understanding of structured information, data quality, reporting and the importance of making complex datasets useful to the people who actually need them.
This technical data experience was subsequently combined with extensive practical M&E Estates surveying. Projects have involved the identification, assessment and recording of building services assets across complex operational estates.
The business has expanded into specialist Estate and compliance work including fire door asset registers, water safety and scalding risk assessments, Estates emergency information and associated asset-data projects.
Survey work increasingly highlighted the need for better ways of managing the information being collected. Bespoke database and web applications were therefore developed using technologies including SQL Server, PHP, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
The natural progression has been to bring Estate drawings and Estate data together. CAD drawings can be transformed into intelligent web-ready graphics, allowing individual rooms and spaces to become an interface to the information associated with them.
This work has developed into Visual Estates — an approach to presenting asset and compliance information spatially rather than relying solely on conventional spreadsheets, registers and database screens.
The strength of the business lies in the connection between practical Estate knowledge, structured data and software development.
Practical experience of surveying and recording assets within large and complex estates.
Structuring Estate information so that it can be searched, analysed, maintained and reported.
Developing practical tools around the way Estates teams actually use their information.
Survey, inspect and record the physical buildings and assets.
Turn survey information into useful, searchable Estate data.
Connect information back to the Estate through interactive digital plans.
Our approach is not to introduce technology simply for the sake of technology. Digital systems should make existing Estate information easier to access, understand and use.
Wherever possible, our digital work is designed to make use of information organisations already possess — including CAD drawings, asset registers, spreadsheets, survey information and existing databases.
The objective is straightforward: turn Estate information into practical knowledge.
